Did you even notice how many mobile devices do you have? MP3, mobile phone, tablet PC, laptop, digital camera, GPS, and handheld console and more. All these mobile devices are powered by batteries, which cause the most concerns about battery life.
Generally, battery life depends on your settings and apps you run. Meanwhile, knowledge about battery maintenance is also important. You may have backups, but if you own an iPhone, unfortunately you are not able to change the battery.

Take Li-on battery as example. When you buy a new battery, it does not matter how many times you charge and discharge it. But after a long time of usage, usually more than one year, you will notice the difference. The battery lasts shorter as there is a loss of battery capacity.
There are rumors on the internet that new battery should be charged for more than 12 hours for three times, then totally discharge it in order to activate the most battery capacity.
Well according to experiments, the best way to maintain a Li-on battery is light usage and quick charge and discharge. The battery life depends on how many times you fully charge and discharge it, the more times, the shorter battery life.

MUMBAI: Finally it is happening. Star One, the youth-focussed Hindi general entertainment channel from the Star India stable, is going to be replaced by a new channel ‘Life OK’ on 18 December.

While Star One will cease operations on 16 December, Life OK will go on air on 18 December. The channel will also have a complete new set of programming and packaging sans “Star” branding.
The channel’s philosophy is “cherishing what you have”. Life OK will remind and invite everyone to value the things that well and truly matter in life like family ties, relationships, valuing traditions and peace of mind, while in the eternal quest for more.
Among the programming, Life OK will have shows like Devon Ke Dev... Mahadev (8 pm), Tum Dena Saath Mera (8.20 pm), Meri Maa (9 pm), Dil se di dua... Saubhagyavati Bhava?, Sapno Ke Bhanwar Mein and Hum Ne Li Hai...Shapath.

New Delhi: As Star India Pvt. Ltd draws the curtains on its eight-year-old Hindi channel Star One, Rupert Murdoch’s entertainment company is launching Life OK, a brand new channel aimed at the 150 million television viewers in the Hindi-speaking market. Planned to go on air on 18 December, Life OK will be Star India’s first major launch under Uday Shankar who was appointed CEO in October 2007, and expects to reach 30 million viewers on day one.

In the works for a year, Life OK will serve what Shankar calls the “multilayered” audience in the Hindi-speaking market. “With the proliferation of entertainment channels in Hindi and the regional languages, the heterogeneity of the Indian television audiences is coming into full play. We could not have addressed such vast audiences with just one offering called Star Plus, no matter how successful,” said Shankar.Having secured Star Plus’ position as the market leader (with weekly gross rating points close to 350), Star India is looking to consolidate. “Viewers were forced to go to other channels because we weren’t providing enough sampling opportunities,” Shankar said.
Life OK will address a certain mindset and not the age group, according to Ajit Thakur, general manager, Life OK. The channel will serve in the age group of 15 plus and offer mixed programmes, including comedies, thrillers and mythologicals. “However, every story will have an underlying value.”
The name Life OK reflects the philosophy of the new brand. “Through our stories we wish to tell people that you are free to seek what you want but in your search for more you must not forget what you already have,” Thakur said. The “values” concept will be reinforced by Madhuri Dixit, who will play the sutradhar (storyteller) and interpret the values in the stories for the audience. “She is more like the brand philosopher and not the brand ambassador,” Thakur said.
The new channel will be fiction-led as Shankar believes in habit-forming content. “I am not a great believer in reality shows.”
Manoj Malkani, vice-president at Zenith Optimedia Pvt. Ltd, however, senses a dissonance in the programming line-up: “If the channel is trying to reach out to a different audience than Star Plus, then putting out shows like Devon Ka Dev Mahadev (mythology) may not cut much ice.”
He said the shows lined up on Life OK did not seem radically different from what is playing on existing entertainment channels.
The channel will differ from others in some ways. It will telecast serials on all days of the week instead of the five-day calendar followed by others. The decision is based on complaints from consumers who found weekend TV boring.
Armed with a launch budget of more than Rs 700 crore, the channel is expected to spend Rs 120 crore in marketing the brand via digital media, roadblocks on television, print and outdoor campaigns. The rest is being invested in programming and distribution.
Shankar dismisses concerns about launching a new brand in an overcrowded market. On any given day, eight Hindi channels broadcast about 58-60 shows during the three and a half hour prime time band on weekdays. “We are adding another six-seven programmes, so actually it’s not much difference from the consumer point of view.”
Shripad Kulkarni, chief executive officer of Allied Media, part of Percept Ltd, agreed, citing the example of Colors, which also entered a crowded market and made a mark.
Life OK also plans to manage advertising inventory differently. It will have three shows an hour unlike the standard two on other channels and advertising breaks won’t exceed two minutes.
“That’s nothing new,” said Shankar. “We have been cutting down on our inventories across channels. Channel V inventory has been halved for better consumer experience. This has helped us. Viewers have rewarded us with better ratings. People watch you for the content eventually.”
Sejal Shah, vice-president, India Media Exchange (IMX), Publicis Groupe’s media buying unit, said that launching amid an economic slowdown could have a negative impact on revenue. “But it has made it very clear that it intends to go slow in terms of advertising. It may not be a big concern since the Star network is doing well.”
Amit Ray, president and COO at Lintas Media Group (LMG), views the limited ad break strategy as a wise one. “A lot of the people who have moved out or are moving out of Hindi general entertainment are young people and they don’t tolerate much advertising.”
Shankar said Star One failed because it wasn’t allowed to compete with Star Plus. Life OK is “a risk, huge risk, with all the investments and time and effort gone into it”.

Take your programs with you
We all know how frustrating it is when we take your files to another computer just to discover that the software required to read the files is not installed.
Here’s the simplest solution – take your programs with you – on your USB thumb drive. Here’s how to do it with Portable Apps:
1. Go to the Portable Apps website and download the installer, choosing the software you want to carry along.
2. Run the installer and install the software to the root of your USB thumb drive.
And you’re done! As soon as you connect your thumb drive into a computer, Portable Apps will open up automatically.

Surf anonymously
With Portable Apps and Firefox, you can surf the web without leaving any trace on the computer you are using. If you want extra security, install a Firefox security plugin such as FoxyProxy. To iput Firefox onto the drive, just copy-paste the Firefox folder from you computer, or install Firefox onto the thumb drive.

Set a program to run automatically (autorun)

Ever lost a USB drive? Even if you haven’t, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll lose a few during your life. And with all the important information on it, it could be a disaster to have it fall into someone’s hands.
A good idea is to encrypt all the information on the drive, but you would still want it back, wouldn’t you? Luckily, the folks at the Daily Cup Of Tech have come up with a solution.

Save a program called “Help! I’m Lost!” on the drive, that a finder just can’t get around opening. The program opens a message box with your personal “I’m lost” message. It’s a good idea to offer the finder a bigger reward than the drive itself, so that they’ll be interested in contacting you.

Hide the drive inside something

Why not surprise your friends and co-workers by sticking something that looks like a broken USB cable into the computer’s USB drive?
You’ll be sure to get a few shocked faces when you start to play a movie from it.

Secure your PC
Just like with an RFID badge, you can use a USB drive to lock and unlock a PC. Insert it to begin working and pull it out when you’ve finished, locking the computer. There are several programs for this . Rohos, a commercial program and WiKID, a semi-open source one.
If you really need to secure your computer with a USB drive, I suggest you give Rohos a try, as WiKID is rather complicated.

Portable jukebox
Don’t just carry the music with you, also carry the player! You can install audio programs such as WinAmp and CoolPlayer+ on your thumb drive. Just unextract the ZIP folders to the USB drive.
If you want the jukebox to start up automatically when you connect the memory stick to the computer, use the autorun feature shown tip 3 and point it to the exe of your audio player.

Encrypt your data
If you carry any sensitive indormation on your USB memory stick, a good idea is to encrypt it. Hardware-level encryption will help, but it will cost extra. You can get a free program to encrypt your data just as securely. For this I recommend TrueCrypt, but most others will also do.
You will need admin access on the computer you want to use your encrypted thumb drive on, so this it’s usability a little.

Run a standalone OS for dedicated tasks
The easiest OS to boot from a USB drive is probably Linux. There are many small capacity Linux versions out there that will fit on your drive. The best 3 are Puppy Linux, Damn Small Linux and Webconverger.
Make sure you select a version that needs less space than your USB drive’s maximum, so you have room for files and software.
And this leads us nicely to the final tip…

Run Windows itself from a USB thumb drive
Modifying Windows to work on a USB drive is quite difficult, but luckily there are some tools that will do it for us. Note that you will need a separate Windows license for this, as Microsoft only lets you use one for each single computer, and a USB drive is treated by them like a computer…
What you’ll need:

A licensed copy of Windows
A USB device, min. 1GB (We recommend a USB hard disk, as a flash memory stick will become unusable after 100000 writing processes. Assuming that only 2 processes are used per second, the drive will last only 60 days with 8 hours of work each day… A hard disk doesn’t have this problem.)

Tired of the boring old “start” button at the bottom left corner of your Windows XP’s monitor? Want something new to replace iit? Well here’s how to change it.
With a few modifications in the Windows Registry, you can replace the “start” text with anything you like. Great for achieving a new, custom look for your Windows XP. So let’s get started.

Warning: this tutorial is more for advanced users, and I'm not
responsible if your system gets messed up. Only attempt the following
at your own risk.

Step 1: Modify explorer.exe

If the warning didn’t scare you enough, then the title of this step probably did. Yes, we are going to change Explorer, the backbone of your Windows XP, but don’t worry. Everything should be safe as long as you follow the steps closely.

As explorer is a binary file, we need a special tool to modify it. One of the best ones for this purpose is Resource Hacker. There are of course others that will get the trick done, but we will be using RH this tutorial so I recommend installing it to avoid making mistakes. Install it and let’s continue.
As always before changing anything. you want to back up. So open My Computer and navigate to and look for explorer. Copy paste it to a safe location on your hard drive.
Now that you’ve backed it up, fire up Resource Hacker and find the same explorer.exe.

When you’ve found and opened explorer in RH, navigate to String Table -> 37 -> 1033. The “start” value is on line 4, after the 578. Change the text “start” to anything you want, making sure you keep the quotes. In this example. I changed the text to xptricks.net.

Press the Compile Script button to make Resource Hacker put together the code. Now click File and Save the script as explorer.exe. into C: \WINDOWS\inf or another C: \WINDOWS subfolder.
Note: make sure you choose Save AS, NOT just save!!
And that’s all for the first step! Now let’s move onto the second one -modifying the registry.

Step 2: changing the registry.

By now, you have a modified explorer sitting in the /inf/ subfolder, so we need to tell Windows to use that one, instead of the original one still resting untouched.
To do this, we need to make just one simple registry modification. To open up the registry, press start (something else soon ) -> run and type regedit.
In the registry editor window that opens, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon and look for the registry entry “shell”. Click it.

Change the explorer.exe to inf/explorer.exe or whereever you saved the modified explorer.
And believe it or not, you’re done! All you have to do now is reboot or log out and bacö in to see the changes. Enjoy your new custom Windows XP start button!

Kokedama bonsai

1. Prepare the materials:

Peat soil
Akadama soil
Green moss
Newspaper

2. Mix the soils and make the moss ball

Example kokedama mix

peat soil 70% akadama 30%
peat soil 50% sand type soil 15% akadama soil 35%

Important to making kokedama balls is to mix the soils well, and make a clay. (you can use your own soil blend. If the consistency of the clay is too loose, it will break when it's watered.)

3. Remove the soil off of your plant

How to mix bonsai soils (fun part!)

Welcome to Bonsai Soil Tutorial
In this tutorial, you'll learn the basics of bonsai soils and how to mix them for your bonsai.
Learning the basic bonsai soils is boring but playing with them is fun! Basically, making your own soil is more of a trial and error process -- the only way to learn is to try it and see if your plant likes it or not. Mixing the soil for your plant is also about discovering what your plant likes, as in "does your plant like it more wet or dry?" "does it like to be inside or outside?" So mixing the soil for one bonsai is different from the next, including where you keep the bonsai as well. Even though for the same kind of bonsai, a lot of people use a different mix of soil because they know their bonsai based on their experience and the way they grow it is different. So search a little bit about your plant and discover your plant's favorite. It's worth it.

Bonsai soil techniques and knowledge

There are basically two kinds of bonsai:

Coniferous trees (e.g., pines or any trees that make cones)
Deciduous trees, broad leaved trees and fruit trees. (e.g., maples)

The basic soil knowledge:
Akadama soil works similar to seramis and Kanuma soil is Japanese pumice.
For coniferous trees, akadama (or same kind of soils) 70% and kanuma(pumice)30%.
For deciduous trees, akadama 90% and kanuma 10%
Some Ideas
If your blend gets dried out too fast, you can try more akadama or soil with good water absorption and lessen other soils.
If your blend retains too much water and does not drain well, then you can try more sand type soil (like haydite, decomposed granite for better drainage), and lessen akadama or the main soil that you use to retain the water.
The best way to make your own blend is to try out different things and adjust accordingly, because every bonsai is different depending on location and climate, etc.
There is no specific way that you need to follow to make your bonsai soil and a lot of bonsai people use their own blend.
Example blends of soils for coniferous trees are:

Akadama 50%, peat soil 30%, and Kanuma 20%
Akadama 70% and peat soil 30%
Akadama 70% and Kanuma 30%

Example Blends of soils for deciduous trees are:

Akadama 60%, peat soil 30% and kanuma 10%
Akadama 90% and kanuma 10%
Akadama 90% and peat soil 10%
Akadama 60%, peat soil 30% and sand (other grit 10%)
Akadama 90% and pumice 10%

Let's say that your plant is a kind of coniferous tree, and you made your blend with akadama 50% peat soil 30% kanuma 20%, you should check if the the plant or soil gets dried too fast or the soil has the right amount of water all the time.
Just imagine that this way: akadama allows for some space for air in the pot so the soil and roots can breath, kanuma holds the water inside, and peat provides the nutrients needed for the plant. Always try to imagine what's happening inside the pot and the reason why you mix the soil with other soils. It's always better that way and it makes you try and find a better mix of soils for your plant, thinking of the reason why you pick the soils and how they will work.

wiring creates some kind of risk that can cause the tree to have difficulty surviving the winter

How to wire bonsai

Wire should bend outside of the point you want to curve so it can hold the
branch or the trunk the best and prevent them from trying to go back to the original shape.

If single wiring is not effectively bending the branches or trunk, you could also double the wire to hold the shape you want better.
But avoid cross wiring on the trunk, as it blocks the sap going down the tree and can cause the damage to the tree.
(In general, use parallel wiring and avoid cross wiring. Only use cross wiring when there is not enough space where the wires can fit parallel.)

Start bending the wire from the center. (red circle)

When to remove the wires

Once you have wired the tree, you must leave it on for at least 2 months to 3 years (depends on the tree growth).
The best time to remove the wires is just right before the wires start to cut into the tree.

Hello, thank you for visiting this bonsai root cutting tutorial. In this tutorial, you'll learn how to cut the root of bonsai and what to be careful of when you cut the root.

Why to cut the roots?

As plants grow, their roots grow too. And for bonsai, their roots are in a small pot so if their roots overgrow, they block out everything else in the pot (water absorption, drainage, aeration, etc).

This can ruin the plant itself.

How to cut the bonsai root and what to be careful about

First, cut the wire that's holding the plant.

Make the soil loose from the pot using a stick or something.

You shouldn't take the plant out forcefully because it can ruin the root.

Take the soil off.

Basically, you need to take most of the soil off so you can see the shape of the root.

First, from the bottom.

Then the top.

After you can see the shape and the condition of the root,

start cutting the root from the longest roots.

The ones you need to cut (but don't need to cut it all. It depends on the size and conditions of your root and plant.)

fat roots
bent roots
roots crossing other roots
roots growing straight down
roots growing outward and then inward
roots with bumps(which may be root disease)

These roots can affect the shape of the plant, and how the trunk, branches and leaves grow.

A good root shape grows out equally in all directions.

Roots that grow parallel to the ground are also good. (To make the root grow like this you need to put the plant in a thin pot so the root can't grow straight down.)

Some notes

When cutting a fat (big) root, it is better to cut it at a diagonal so the part that's cut can have more room to get water and nutrients.

What to be careful about

Plants get water and other nutrients from their small and thin roots ( I call it "root's hair" ) so if you cut too many of those roots the plant can't get what it needs to grow.
It is not recommended to feed any fertilizer to the plant after root cutting at least for about a month. (because the plant itself is weak now and not good at absorbing whatever it takes to grow from its root -- it can ruin the root.)
Use sharp scissors to prevent the root from becoming waggedy-edgidy-dwingy.

After you're done re-potting, water the plant and take it outside and let it get lots of sunlight!

Watering is one important part of caring for bonsai.

Bonsai watering knowledge

When and how to water

water when the surface of the soil looks dry (the color of the soil on the surface looks whitish. Paying attention to this is important, I'll explain why later.)
water the leaves as well(spray is useful for indoor bonsai)
you can use a gardening (watering) hose, a watering can, etc
in the summer especially, you can even put the whole bonsai (including the pot) in a bucket containing enough water to cover the pot (not the plant) and leave it a while (a lot air will come out first -- leave it about 5+ mins).

How much water per watering?

If you see water coming out the bottom of the pot it's enough.

Summer

basically twice a day (morning and evening)
avoid watering leaves when the sunlight is strong (it will burn the leaves)
avoid watering when the sunlight is strong. (the water inside the pot gets too hot and it'll spoil the root)
if you are going on a trip and can't water every day, water it a lot and leave it somewhere cool with no sunlight, and put the pot in a bucket with water so the plant can get water from the bottom. It'll help for 2 to 3 days.)

Winter

once or twice a week
avoid watering when the temperature is freezing(midnight or early morning. frozen soil can kill the plant.)
water in the daytime
avoid watering in the evening

Spring and Autumn

once a day
water when the soil is dry
though the time of day doesn't matter, regularly watering(around the same time everyday) is recommended

Why is it important to know the soil color when you water?

Because watering bonsai is not only about watering actually. Watering is also about taking air inside the pot, and as you water your plant every day, you'll notice if the plant needs more water or less by noticing many things such as soil color, the condition of the soil, etc. And keeping track of these things will improve your training. In Japan, it is said that you need 3 years to master watering bonsai. If you are serious about growing bonsai, watering is one of the most important parts and it takes years to master... Essentially if you pay attention to your bonsai even just to watering, you can learn from your bonsai and for your bonsai. There will be a lot of signs that your bonsai is giving you so paying attention to them is also a way of learning. Noticing things that are different from what you do every day will help you train and become the master of bonsai.

Green moss warning

Green moss is nice and makes bonsai more artistic (in my opinion), but there are a few things you should know about green moss.

green moss can keep the water inside the pot and prevents the water from getting dried out fast
green moss takes more time to absorb water so if you are watering through green moss you should make sure that a lot water coming out from the bottom when watering

Making and Growing your bonsai

1 Preparation:

Bonsai Soil: there are many kinds of it and learning how to mix the bonsai soil can be a little complicated for the beginners. So we should stick to a simple way (read more about the bonsai soil). If you are converting your plant into bonsai style, you can use the soil the plant grew up in. In this tutorial we use Akadama soil and Kanuma soil.
coarse soil: used to prevent the main soil inside the pot from coming out of the bottom and helps the water to drain. (only needed depending on size and shape of the pot)
Wires: there are two basic wires for bonsai. Aluminum and Copper. Aluminum wire is softer and easier to use.
Scissors: really don't need expensive one. You can use the one you have at home and if you want the better one you can buy one then.
Pliers/Nippers: the one you have at home is just fine. (need it only to cut and bend the wires.)
Stick: something like chopstick.
Net: to cover the hole in the pot.
Pot: any pots are fine. it won't even need to be a pot. You can use a plate, flat plastic lid of something, and... anything you like as a pot! (pots that don't drain water from the bottom are hard for beginners to use.)
Gloves and newspaper to keep the mess out of your hands and house.
Green moss: to make your bonsai have umm.. a feeling that I can't explain. I don't know why bonsai looks really good with it!
The plant: the one you like to have as bonsai style. Without this you can't make anything.

2 Mixing the soils

Ratio of Akadama soil to Kanuma soil is 7:3
(Akadama soil 7, Kanuma soil 3)

3 Preparing and working on the wires and the net

if you are using your favorite plate or pot that doesn't have a hole on the bottom you can skip this part.
Cut the wire and net

and put them in the pot

To keep the net in place:

insert the wire so the legs go through the net and out the bottom of the pot
bend the looped part of the wire in opposite directions to lay flat against the net.(You can bend the looped part before inserting as well.)
bend the wire sticking out against the pot

Extra wiring if needed:
In case your plant is too big or might not be stable in your pot, put an extra wire from the bottom so you can tie the plant. the length of the wire is up to the size of your plant. Don't worry so much about this. Just prepare the wire with the length you feel comfortable working with(not too short though). If it's too long you can cut it later anyways.

Put the extra wire from the bottom and curve it along the inside of the pot.
Wiring is a little hard but better to practice whenever you have the chance!

4 Putting the Coarse soil

Coarse soil is ,as mentioned in preparation above, used to prevent the main soil inside the pot from coming out of the bottom and helps the water to drain. (only needed depending on size and shape of the pot). if you are using a pot with no hole or flat pot with hole that doesn't have much room for the main soil to fit in you don't need this coarse soil. Keep the room for man soil.

5 Cut extra branch and leaves

Before you take out the plant you should cut the extra branch and leaves a little bit before you take it out (the main trimming is after you put it in the new pot). It's easier to handle the plant later this way.

6 Getting the plant ready for the new pot

Take out the plant and take off the old soil using a stick. If the soil is too hard you can put it in water and leave it a while so the soil comes off easily. ( don't need to take all the soil off.) and cut the extra roots if its too big for your pot.

7 Wiring the root and put a little bit of the main soil( the one you prepared). in this tutorial, a mix of akadama and kanuma soil

Put the plant in the pot and tie it with the wire.
Put the soil little by little and make sure the soil goes everywhere between all the small roots in the pot using the stick, when you do this you can stick it from the top to the bottom of the pot with the stick so you know the soil is getting everywhere. (careful not to damage the root.)

8 Fill the pot with the soil up to 80% of the pot

make sure the soil is filled equally in the pot

9 Watering your new bonsai style plant!

don't know how much of water?

First, you see brown water coming out and later it'll look more clear (no more dirty brown water). That's the cue and you'll see water coming out of the bottom like this.
getting tired? hang in there! almost done!

10 Inserting green moss.

Let's play with a softy,mossy feeling green moss!
Put it tight in the pot so they wont come out. (bonsai somehow looks good with green moss but its okay not to use it, you can use some other colored small soil to cover the surface to make it look good too.)
When you prepare green moss, cut the green moss a little bit bigger than your pot and smush it in your pot so it fits.

11 Tada! Done!
